PUERTO PRINCESA, PALAWAN – This is an attempt to help a set of office mates embarking on a journey with the same drum-beat a la Lord of the Ring’s Fellowship of the Ring. Here is my invariably The Incomplete Puerto Princesa Guide aka My Attempt to Humor a Travel Blog.
We used a plane of AirAsia and from Manila the plane brought us to Puerto Princesa, how wonderful. The price for the round trip airfare for 3 persons is about 3 thousand pesos. This is a promo fare obviously.
Stayed in Floral Villarosa Hotel
This is all worth 3,800 pesos per pax for 3D/2N breakfast included.
Other Puerto Princesa hotels/accommodations options:
City Tour DIY style or no style at all
Talk to a tricycle driver to bring you to the townproper area. There is a mall/supermarket where ATMs are avilable. They call it the NCCC Mall.
Go to Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center. The whole trike roundtrip will just be around 200 bucks. Price will still depend on the number of people in your group. The trip to the crocodile center will be around 1 hour. Probably faster with a car.
Buy a ticket at the left side of the conservation center. Then at the main entrance, write your name in the guestbook as you enter the center with a tour guide.
There was a news of phones slipping off the hands of some tourists in biggest pen of crocodiles. Try not to do this. You have surely mistaken this type of crocodile to another kind.
Of course, you take pictures like everywhere (not inside the cages though!)
Eat sisig crocodile, buy souvenirs within the yard of the Center after the tour.
At night we were able to visit E-Republic. A decent place to get some laughs and drink beers.
Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour
We were part of a group tour. The van had picked up other members of the tour from Acacia Tree Garden Hotel.
It is almost a 2-hour drive to Sabang. There was 1 stop during the whole land travel.
When we arrived at Sabang, there was just too many people. There was a light rain and we needed to buy those raincoats made of flimsy plastics. Unfortunately, the crowd has already built up waiting for their turn to board the bancas with outrigger to reach the Underground river.
Our tour guide just decided to have our buffet lunch first. Nothing really spectacular. We have tried Tamilok (Teredo navalis, scientific name-naks!)
The boat ride is a bit shaky because of the wave. It has continued raining throughout the whole afternoon.
The beach surrounding the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is actually beautiful, we were able to enjoy it after the rain has stopped.
Beware of the wild monkeys while waiting for your turn to enter the underground river. We were advised not to give them food. Bayawak can be seen in the area.
For me, the Underground River is magnificent in size. This is just an amazing experience.
We stayed for a night in Microtel by Wyndham. We have booked this while in Puerto Princesa already. They have a scheduled free shuttle service from the hotel to downtown/airport.
They have a very nice view in the afternoon and the whole landscape will be transformed in the morning due to the high tide.
Swimming in their freshwater pool is a good activity as well while waiting for the sun set.
The next day, the buffet breakfast is mostly composed of local food and to be honest just average and nothing really special.
We checked out late and waited in lobby since our flight back to Manila is still around 6 in the evening. We joined the rest of the guests to the airport and ended our journey in Puerto Princesa.
Yeah, this is not really a complete Puerto Princesa guide and I have not included El Nido to this trip and you guys will not push through with the Underground River tour, but whatever. 🙂
